Paper ANIMATION
The earth is in constant motion, as are we. My work plays with the anticipated movement of our time, socially, culturally and physically. Ideas of gravity, machine motion and found images propel the paper animations in new and unexpected ways. Breathing new life and energy into a tired visual vocabulary, imagining new possibilities for the future.
Sourcing, cutting and scanning paper images for digital manipulation feeds an autonomic narrative for the animations. The found images visually weave together into new tapestries, relationships, pathways and ideas.
A Simple Machine for Living, explores the idea of living life, moving your body through time, space and stages. Sometimes we know where we are going, other moments are surprising and/or transformative, sometimes we are carried, sometimes we carry others. It gets complicated.
Cut-paper storyboards, layouts and backgrounds provide inspiration and new landscapes for paper-animation shorts. The below images describe the process for an underwater scene for an upcoming animation, Flic Flaque, 2024.
Working on longer animations means more world building. Images are cut and pasted to create new worlds. They are then scanned, toned and coloured for effect and atmosphere. Moving visual effects in the backgrounds and characters are then animated separately.
